Just today, for instance, I left my house to go get my hair colored and there was a taxi right there. And I thought, How exciting is it that I live in a city where you can do that? I dont ever think, Oh god, I wonder when that cab is coming, or something like that. Its very exciting, so that sort of spirit I dig into my work as well.What has been the toughest hurdle in your career and how did you overcome it?There has been certain things or people that I have been like, God, what a jerk you are, or jerk-type experiences, and in those situations, I ju st smother people with kindness and love. Even people I dont like, because I think that is the best thing to do. My mum said there is no situation in life that wont go better for you with kindness. My dimples help sometimes, but I really do think in anything in life I do it with respect and kindness. Also, even when people are being crazy and badly behaved and a mess, if you just say Whats wrong? instead of being scared or put off by them. Dont let them dictate your own experience.Whats the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to have a successful career like yours, in any capacity?Just be yourself and have fun. Dont try and become a generic version of yourself - its as simple as that.

Over the course ofher career, Heffernan has run five companies in the US and the UK, taught at the college level, written five books, and given multiple TED Talks.In fact, Heffernanscareer is so impressive that it was hard to narrow my questions for her into a list that would fit in one podcast episode. As you can imagine, the interview was wonderful. The insights Heffernan shared havent left my mind since we spoke.Heffernan describes herself as someonewho has always done work that shes loved. At times, she was paid well at others, she made very little. No matter what, she was always happy in her work.I asked her how shehad been able to organize her career this way. She made two important points.First, when a job wasnt the right fit,Heffernan didnt hesitate to walk away even if she had only been there f or a short period of time. As employees, we tend to stick around for a while out of some sense of artificial loyalty but employers wont hesitate to fire an employee who isnt working out. Why stay in a job that isnt working out for you?WhenHeffernan found herself in a dissatisfying role or company, she looked for another job that would be a better fit. This must have been a tough decision at times, but I think we can all agree it is easier to succeed in an environment that trulysupports us.Heffernans second tip was gold almost literally. She said she always kept enough running away money on hand.I cant tell you how happy this phrase makes me Perhaps you know it by its more common name an emergency fund. Ageism is defined by Dictionary.com as a tendency to regard older persons as debilitated, unworthy of attention, or unsuitable for employment.Do you agree with the above definition? From my experience, I have noticed quite the opposite to be true. Ageism at work stems from the belief that younger, fresher, candidates can contribute more than older, experienced, candidates. I will explain why this is not true below.According to AARP.org, one in five workers in the U.S. (33 million) is age 55 or older. 64% of workers say they have seen or experienced age discrimination at work. 58% of adults believe discrimination against age begins among workers in their 50s. Personally, I have witnessed age discrimination begin among workers in their 40s. Why should you care? Unlike other forms of discrimination, age discrimination will almost certainly affect your lif e at some point in the future.Signs of Discrimination Against AgeHave you ever been told, You are overqualified for the job, You are too senior for this job or You would not fit in with the companys culture? More often than not this is legal code for, You are too old for the job. If you have been told to trim down your background, remove work from your resume, and dumb down your experience, chances are someone is trying to help you appear younger. For starters, older employees have more experience. They have gone through the trenches, made their mistakes, and learned from them. This can be a huge expense financially as well as time invested fixing these mistakes.Experienced employees can act as mentors. Steve Jobs put it nicely when he said, It doesnt make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do. Young companies/founders should not be intimidated by older employees. Instead, they should utilize their experience, knowledge, and professionalism that has been accumulated over the years.Age in Relation to Salary RequirementsMany companies think that the higher the age, the higher the salary they must pay. I am here to tell you that this is not always the case. And even when it is true, you cannot compare apples and oranges.First things first, do not rule a candidate out because you assume they will require a higher salary. Ask them If they tell you that $125,000 is their salary requirements and that is perfectly within your budget, do not rule them out because you are afraid they will leave for a better opportunity.Second, stop being such a stickler on the salary. If someone brings an extra ten years of experience to the table, do they deserve an extra $10,000? Absolutely The experience they will bring and mistakes they will prevent you from making will pay for itself in the first month.Ageism in the Workplace ConclusionIt is a new year. 2018 is here and everyone can play a part in preventing age discrimination at work.
